AgeTech Unwrapped: What Mattered Most in 2024

As we wrap up 2024, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on what truly mattered in our vibrant and ever-evolving AgeTech ecosystem. Whether you’ve been following along through our newsletter, listening to the AgeTech Podcast, or keeping tabs on the trends, it’s been a year packed with breakthroughs, challenges, and opportunities. Let’s dive into the highlights of AgeTech in 2024 – what happened, why it matters, and where we’re headed.

Big Wins in Technology

This year brought some serious innovation. At CES 2024, one standout product was the WE-STIM leggings, designed to stimulate muscles using your own energy. While initially marketed to athletes, this product has potential to improve mobility and recovery for older adults as well.

Meanwhile, a groundbreaking milestone in consumer tech came with Apple’s AirPods receiving FDA approval as hearing aids. This marks the first-ever OTC hearing aid software integrated into a mainstream consumer product. By leveraging advanced algorithms and seamless integration with iPhones, AirPods Pro now offer affordable, accessible hearing enhancement for millions of people with mild to moderate hearing loss. Unlike traditional hearing aids, which often come with high costs, this development puts hearing assistance in the hands of users at a fraction of the price.

These breakthroughs demonstrate how AgeTech isn’t just keeping pace with the tech world – it’s setting the agenda.

Why It Matters: Tackling Big Challenges

While progress abounds, 2024 reminded us of some pressing challenges, and the massive opportunities they present.

Loneliness: A Crisis with Economic Ripples

Loneliness isn’t just an emotional burden; it’s an economic one too. In the U.K., loneliness costs £6,000 per person over the span of a decade. In the U.S., it adds $6.7 billion to Medicare spending every year (source). Even employers are feeling the pinch, as stress from loneliness drives absenteeism and turnover. Startups like Intuition Robotics and Papa are making strides in this space, offering tech-enabled solutions that are both scalable and impactful.

Caregiver Support: The Financial Toll

Family caregivers are essential to the fabric of our society, yet they’re losing over $500 billion in wages annually in the U.S. alone. The ripple effects are profound, impacting not only caregivers’ current finances but also their retirement security. Startups like Aidaly and Givers are stepping up with innovative solutions, from tech-enabled respite care to financial planning tools.

Staffing in Eldercare: A Persistent Crisis

The staffing crisis in eldercare isn’t going away, but 2024 saw promising approaches. Startups like Caribou Rewards help home care agencies align staff incentives with outcomes. Incumbents are already helping care providers across the long-term care continuum to streamline operations, and it’s only a matter of time before AI will take over some of the repetitive tasks that overburden front line workers and hopefully decrease turnover. Solving this crisis is essential to improving care quality and scaling services.

Where We’re Headed: The Path to 2025

AI in Aging: Rapid Evolution

AI will continue transforming how we approach aging, from creating hyper-personalized care plans to enabling older adults to live more independently. Startups leveraging generative AI for education, companionship, and care management are well-positioned to lead this charge.

Distribution and Adoption: A Critical Need

The AgeTech NYC Senior Living Operator Survey revealed a major pain point: many facilities juggle up to 18 separate applications. Integrated solutions will be the key to reducing friction and improving adoption rates across the industry.

Shifting Perceptions of Aging

Perhaps the most exciting trend is the (slow) cultural shift in how aging is viewed – not as a problem to solve but as a natural, enriching phase of life. This mindset opens the door for technology to enhance dignity, connection, and fulfillment.

That said, rampant ageism remains pervasive, with stereotypes about older adults entrenched in many industries. However, the tide is beginning to turn. We’re seeing more positive portrayals of older people in the media, from vibrant characters in film and television to stories highlighting their contributions and resilience. These shifts in representation are helping to challenge outdated perceptions, and while there’s still work to do, the overall trajectory is promising. We’re heading in the right direction toward a more inclusive and respectful view of aging.

The Bottom Line

2024 showed us that AgeTech is maturing. We’ve moved beyond the “if we build it, they will come” phase to focus on tackling real-world challenges like distribution, scale, and profitability. The companies that will thrive are those that combine innovative technology with a deep understanding of older adults’ needs, smart distribution strategies, and sustainable business models.

It’s been an incredible year. Whether you’re building solutions, funding them, or cheering from the sidelines, thank you for being part of the AgeTech Revolution 🙏.
