Unlocking Possibilities: Apple Vision Pro and the AgeTech Revolution

Apple just launched an exciting new consumer device – the Apple Vision Pro, which it calls a “spacial computer”. The technology is undeniably remarkable, yet its potential impact on AgeTech is even more significant.

I’ve been saying for years that VR and “the metaverse” could be game changers for aging in place, especially when it comes to tackling loneliness and social isolation. In this article, I’d like to elaborate on this and discuss several opportunities for AgeTech founders to develop solutions for the Apple Vision Pro that could tackle this and other challenges of aging.

This video sums up the main points, the text below elaborates.

What is the Apple Vision Pro?

In essence, the Apple Vision Pro is Apple’s take on a virtual reality headset, though you won’t find those words in their marketing materials. While it’s a first-generation, high-end device designed for advanced early adopters, the real excitement lies not just in its technological prowess but in Apple’s proven track record.Apple has a history of revolutionizing categories and building ecosystems around its products, as seen with the groundbreaking iPhone and the introduction of the App Store.

Why AgeTech and Virtual Reality

While other tech giants have entered the virtual reality space, Apple brings a unique perspective. The AgeTech ecosystem, with its focus on solving real problems for real people, stands out as a perfect match for virtual reality. Consider applications like rehabilitation, caregiver training, immersive experiences in senior living, and more. Several startups within the AgeTech sphere have already demonstrated the efficacy of virtual reality in addressing critical challenges of aging.

Breaking Physical Constraints

Virtual reality, by its nature, removes some of the constraints imposed by our physical bodies and limitations. This opens the door to immersive experiences that go beyond the capabilities of traditional screens. Think about immersive tours, from global adventures to exploring apartment buildings and senior living communities.

Game-Changer: Tackling Loneliness

One potential game-changer is the use of virtual reality or the metaverse to combat loneliness and social isolation. While video calls serve a purpose, the Apple Vision Pro takes it a step further with FaceTime calls creating avatars in real-time. Once fully immersive experiences are available, it could revolutionize how we connect with loved ones.

More Potential Use Cases:

Immersive virtual social club

This isn’t a new concept in AgeTech, Uniper has been doing this for years using TVs.

But let’s take that a step further. Think about joining any social club in the world using your AVP and having it feel like you’re in the same room as everyone else (also using their AVP).

Think about social clubs that will be created that are fully virtual – welcome members from anywhere in the world using an AVP and don’t even have a physical location – wouldn’t that be something?

Home modifications and safety

Combining the immersive nature of virtual reality, with generative AI that was trained on data from the world’s most age-friendly, beautifully designed homes. Using best practices of accessibility and safety, your APV could take you for a tour in your own home and guide you on how to make it fit your needs, as you grow older. The business model? Advertising home modification contractors and interior design stores.
